New Delhi: It’s been five years since Parliament was attacked by terrorists. The case was solved in record time – exactly one week. Mohammed Afzal emerged as the man who had helped in plotting and execution of the Attack. CNN-IBN reports on what exactly had happened that day and how the cops got hold of Afzal.
On December 13, 2001 a white ambassador car with Parliament and home ministry stickers enters Parliament around 1145 hrs, IST from gate number 11.
The heavily armed terrorists open fire when signaled to stop after their car rammed into Vice President Krishna Kant's car. A pitched gun battle ensued for over 30 minutes between the security personnel and the five terrorists.
All the terrorists are shot dead one of them blows himself up. The plan to attack India's pillar of democracy had failed but not before the loss of nine human lives.
Jt CP, Special Cell Karnal Singh says, “If Afzal would not have been there it was not possible for bombers to come and settle in Delhi. The local person was required to get the racket done.”
Afzal met Ghazi Baba the main conspirator in Parliament attack case, twice in Srinagar. He facilitated entry of all five terrorists in the Capital and arranged three separate hideouts for them.
He procured a motorcycle; a white ambassador car and explosives used in the Parliament attack and helped in fake Parliament stickers.
Afzal fled to the Valley immediately after the Parliament attack in a truck.
He was arrested on December 15 in Srinagar and police recovered one laptop with a Pakistani ISP and Rs 10 lakh in cash from their possession.
It's been five years since the Parliament attack took place. While all the main attackers were killed the same day, there is still an element of mystery around those caught by the police including the key conspirator Mohammed Afzal.
