New Delhi: Indian Airlines steward Victor Joynath De has approached the supreme court seeking his reinstatement as cabin crew, years after he was grounded for sporting a handle bar moustache.
De was grounded by the Indian Airlines management in 2002 for refusing to shave off his whiskers.
The airlines’ explanation at the time was that De’s moustache violated Indian Airline's Personal Conduct Code of 1998, which does not allow the display of moustaches which could be unhygienic.
The Code also says that only Sikhs could have beards, that moustaches could not be droopy and long side-burns are not permitted.
The airline also argued that De's asset was a health risk, especially since he frequently handled food.
Since June 2002, De has been doing a desk job at Calcutta airport and deals with passenger complaints.
Earlier, the Calcutta high court had ruled in his favour saying that his job should be given back to him, but years after the ruling, De has not got his job and has now approached the Supreme Court
The court has come to his rescue and issued a notice to the Indian Airlines management asking why De should not be reinstated as cabin crew.
