Ajay Bahl's handling of Shadab Kamal was a treat to watch in 'BA Pass' as he churned out the best from the actor.

New Delhi: The awards season is upon us and this is the time when the best of Indian cinema is judged, reviewed rewarded for entertaining us in the past year. 2013 has seen a mixed bag of films comprising both popular and art house cinema. In our maiden initiative, we have selected nominees in various popular categories and will let our readers decide the outcome. It is a month long poll, so go ahead and vote for your favourite performers of 2013.

The Hindi film industry was never known for organised filmmaking, but over the years the scenario has changed a lot. Now, the industry has tilted more in favour of people who have big pockets. The process of filmmaking has become less important than its publicity drive and big studios are emerging as the champions of this art. However, every now and then we come across films which showcase fantastic content and get benefitted by the word-of-mouth publicity. We have picked these five films as the five most deserving Hindi independent films of 2013.

BA Pass: Based on Mohan Sikka's story 'The Railway Aunty', this film was applauded for two things, its bold content and depiction of a wayward adolescent. Ajay Bahl's handling of Shadab Kamal was a treat to watch as he churned out the best in the actor. Aptly supported by Shilpa Shukla, this brutally dark story brought-out the issues and dilemma faced by a small towner in a city like Delhi. The director chose to show the dim side of a vibrant place like the Delhi University and it turned out to be the masterstroke. The depression hounded the audience for many hours even after leaving the cinema halls, and that was the victory for the film's team.

Ankur Arora Murder Case: This film had everything an ideal film would need. A story with social concern, lead actors who understood the seriousness of the situation and a believable premise. Suhail Tatari chose to tell a story which was not commercial and he was heavily relying on the positive reviews. The film critics didn't let him down and his film turned out to be one of the most hard hitting films of 2013. 'Ankur Arora Murder Case' presented the grim condition of medical negligence in a fast-forward city like Mumbai. To say the least, it was a brave film.

Peddlers: Those who have seen this film have shown only two types of reactions. Either they said the film is exceptionally good for its portrayal of an unstable person or they found it disturbing. It was a win-win situation for the makers as the same was intended. Vasan Bala gave Gulshan Devaiah the role of his life time and he passed the litmus test with flying colours.

Listen Amaya: Why the film was not released at a huge level? This question will keep haunting the makers as it was liked by almost every viewer. The candid shots of Purani Delhi and the sparkling chemistry of Farooque Sheikh and Deepti Naval made it a heart touching film. The way Swara Bhaskar played the dual character of the sutradhaar and a sensible daughter was a treat to watch. Avinash Singh turned a good story into an emotional ride.

Maazi: One of the better stories of 2013, 'Maazi' was the story of an aliented Indian. One who was aware of the developments, but who couldn't alienate himself from the ghosts of his past. The film created a good buzz despite a limited release and shooting on realistic locations made it a film to watch with attention. Jaideep Chopra found his characters in crime affected areas and the audience accepted his selection.####
