A CNN-IBN initiative brought an HIV patient living illegally in Dubai back to his family after six long years.

Hyderabad: Farooq Bin Mohammed's family had lost all hopes of reuniting with him. Thirty-year-old Farooq from Konapur in Karimnagar had gone to Oman with many dreams, but he ended up as a bonded labourer. He later got infected with HIV and after six long years, the man is on his deathbed today.

On May 24 this year, the family got a call form the Indian embassy in Oman, telling them that Farooq was paralysed. They were also asked to raise Rs 1 lakh to bring him back to India.

But, his family didn't have the finances to bring him back. They were in tears and had no help coming their way. It was then that CNN-IBN stepped in. And thanks to the CNN-IBN initiative, Farooq will now return home in a week's time to meet his loved ones.

The Ministry of External Affairs has agreed to pay for Farooq's journey home. Farooq will now be back home in a week, after a long wait.

"Thanks to the effort made by CNN-IBN, we came to know about the situation of the family. CNN-IBN went to the remote village where the family resides and passed on the message to the family members and then brought them to us," an official from the Ministry of External Affairs, B Bala Bhaskar said.

Immediately after CNN-IBN aired their story, the MEA got in touch with the Indian embassy in Oman.

"The Indian embassy followed my suggestion and raised money from social organisations and also donated some money from the embassy fund. We need more money now as the Oman Government has imposed a huge fine for his stay as an illegal immigrant. We are trying to get the fine waived," Bhaskar revealed.
