CHENNAI: A police inspector, who was almost caught in a trap laid by the officials of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption while receiving a bribe of  Rs 5,000, escaped from spot under the cover of darkness in Adambakkam on Monday. Teams have been formed to search him.Police said Joseph Genziger of T Nagar, who ran a gas agency at Medavakkam High Road, Adambakkam, for the past 29 years, had received a phone call from crime inspector Soundarajan last week asking him to come and meet him. When Joseph met the inspector, he had allegedly told him that the gas agency owner had been supplying domestic gas cylinders for commercial purposes and demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 for not taking any action.Joseph had lodged a complaint with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption and a team led by DSP Ponnusamy, with three inspectors Uchchapatti Paramasamy, Ashokan and Chellamuthu, arrived at the police station on Monday evening. They stood a few metres away from the police station and kept watch.  When the inspector finally arrived at the station, Joseph gave him the money and allegedly signalled to the vigilance officials. “Joseph had been in the business for 29 years and he had not actually supplied gas cylinders for wrong purposes,” a police official said. The Adambakkam inspector, who was alerted by the signal, ran out of the police station and, in the cover of darkness, escaped after throwing away the money.  “We were waiting for two hours and he came only by 8 pm. He was wearing uniform and he escaped without his cap,” said a police official. The police have formed special teams to track down the absconding inspector and are continuing their search in surrounding areas.
