Interim Budget: IB gets more funds post 26/11
The outlay for IB has been given a quantum jump.

New Delhi: To strengthen the intelligence gathering machinery in view of the recent terror attacks, the outlay for Intelligence Bureau has been given a quantum jump from Rs 534.89 crore in 2008-09 to Rs 736.75 crore in the Interim Budget for 2009-10, while the newly-established National Investigation Agency meant to probe terror strikes has an allocation of just Rs 10 crore.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Interim Budget has also provided a substantial increase in the allocation for the elite National Security Guard (NSG), which played a crucial role during Mumbai 26/11.

The NSG, a specialised force to combat terror and specific situations needing special skills, has got an allocation of Rs 248.71 crore -- much more than Rs 157.58 crore given to the force in 2008-09 budget that was revised to Rs 204.08 crore.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has also got a substantial hike in allocation from Rs 5239.65 crore in the revised estimate during 2008-09 to Rs 6336.86 crore this year. BSF, which keeps the vigil on along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir and Indo-Pak borders in Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat and Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar border, had been allocated Rs 3833.24 crore during the previous year's Budget.

Coastal security, which is on the priority list of the government post 26/11 when ten terrorists from Karachi reached Mumbai by sea route, has got an allocation of Rs 103.66 crore during 2009-10.

The allocation for the Home Ministry has been increased to Rs 1466.75 crore, of which Rs 210.75 would be plan and Rs 1256 crore non-plan. This allocation for the Ministry in 2008-09 was Rs 959.5 crore, which had Rs 59.50 crore-plan and Rs 900 non-plan and was revised to Rs 1,163 crore.

Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers has got the allocation of Rs 230 crore, of which Rs 1.93 crore is for salaries and Rs 160.76 crore is meant for tour expenses. The allocation for Prime Ministers Office has been made at Rs 23.39 crore, while Cabinet Secretariat's allocation was Rs 22.49 crore. The National Security Council Secretariat has been given Rs 13.90 crore in the Interim Budget.
