IPL spot-fixing: Key bookie sent to 4-day police custody
Police said he is one of the main bookies and was in constant touch with several of the bookies prior to their arrest in the case.

An alleged key bookie arrested in the IPL spot-fixing case was on Friday remanded by a Delhi court to four-day custody of Delhi Police which said he needs to be questioned to unearth the "deep-rooted conspiracy" behind the scam. Additional Sessions Judge Raj Rani Mitra sent Jitendra Jain alias Jeetu to police remand till July 2, 2013 after he was produced before the court.

"The accused is remanded to four days of police custody. He shall be produced on July 2 before the court concerned," the judge said. Jitendra was arrested from Ahmedabad on Thursday after being on the run for over a month. Delhi police had sought 10 days remand saying he is one of the main bookies and was in constant touch with several of the bookies prior to their arrest in the case. The investigating agency also told the court that he is allegedly part of a syndicate which functioned under the command of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel.

The agency said his custodial interrogation is required to find out the chain of events leading up to the whole spot fixing scandal. Jitendra is the 29th person to be arrested in the case and provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have been invoked against him. The Delhi Police on May 16 had arrested three cricketers -- S Sreesanth, Chandila and Ankeet Chavan of Rajasthan Royal's -- on charges of spot-fixing.

The Delhi Police had slapped provisions of MCOCA on Sreesanth, Chandila, Chavan and on 25 others in the case, alleging that they were acting under the command of Dawood and Shakeel. In the same case, the court had on June 10 granted bail to Sreesanth, Chavan and 19 others on the ground of lack of evidence against them to be charged under MCOCA. At present, seven accused, including Chandila, are in jail and their bail applications are currently pending in the court.
