MALAPPURAM: ‘Baithul Rahma’, the housing scheme in the name of the late Muslim League leader Panakkad Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal, was launched in the district on Friday. The foundation stones for 151 houses were laid simultaneously at 151 different locations in the district by party leaders. The scheme, which aims at building houses for homeless people in the district, is the first-of-its-kind charity initiative by a political party in the state. On the lines of the EMS Housing Scheme launched by the LDF government, the Muslim League Malappuram district committee planned the initiative to commemorate the late leader on his second death anniversary. Every municipal and panchayat committee has been asked to select the beneficiaries of the project and raise funds. All the 151 houses being built under the project will have the same plan and design, and will be completed by next May at a cost of Rs10 crore, said IUML district committee representatives. According IUML district secretary P Abdul Hameed, the project is totally subsidised and the beneficiaries are being picked up irrespective of political and religious affiliations. “The scheme is launched in the district only. The state committee will discuss if it should be extended to other districts,” he said.
