Bangalore: Raising their voice against increasing crimes against women in the country, many women's organisations and students took to the streets in Bangalore on Saturday demanding justice for the 23-year-old gangrape victim in the national capital.

Over 600 women belonging to various women's organisations and the CPI-M youth wing, Students Federation of India Bangalore, formed a human chain for over two hours near Star Bazaar in Rajajinagar in Bangalore, holding placards and shouting slogans against the state and the Central governments for their "inaction and failure to protect women".

Vice-President of Akhila Bharatha Janawadi Mahila Sangha, KS Sharada, who spearheaded the protests, told that atrocities against women were on the increase. It is high time the governments came out with an "action plan to stop such crimes like having helplines at each and every police station where any crime against women is not only registered immediately but also action is taken", she said.

The police has to play very pro-active role in checking such heinous crimes and ensure that culprits in such cases are brought to book as early as possible, Sharada said.

"There is also an urgent need to have a re-look at our laws to see that the rapists get appropriate punishment".
