New Delhi: Nalini Sriharan, who is serving life imprisonment for her involvement in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, believes meeting the murdered leader’s daughter has “washed away her sins.”

Priyanka Gandhi Nalini met in a jail in Vellore on March 19. Nalini’s brother P S Bhagyanathan told CNN-IBN on Wednesday his sister is indebted to Priyanka for meeting her.

“She was very happy meeting Priyanka. She felt her sins have been washed away. It was a surprise visit—I don’t know what they talked about. The meeting was very personal and confidential,” said Bhagyanathan.

Priyanka on Tuesday confirmed to CNN-IBN she had met Nalini. “Yes, I did. The visit reported on March 19 as a visit to Vellore temple was not to the temple. I went to speak with her,” she said when asked to comment on a newspaper’s report.

“It was purely a personal visit on my own initiative which must be respected. I do not believe in anger or violence and I refuse to let it overpower me. Meeting Nalini was my way of coming to terms with my father's death," she said.

Nalini, 43, was sentenced to death by a special court for her involvement in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination at Sriperumbudur near Chennai on May 21,1991.

The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after Rajiv’s wife Sonia Gandhi petitioned for clemency for the sake of Nalini's daughter.

Nalini, an Indian, had accompanied the Sri Lankan woman suicide bomber who blew up Rajiv Gandhi with hidden explosives at Sriperumbudur.

Nalini, who was a close friend of an LTTE operative known as Murugan, who, too, is an accused in the case, later gave birth to a girl in prison.
