CHENNAI: Vasan Eye Care employees’ recently joined hands with students from leading colleges in the city for a noble cause. On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, over 500 participants formed a human chain in the region of Vadapalani and Madipakkam. The group sought to create awareness on diabetes and the importance of proper medication, care & prevention. The World Diabetes Day 2011 global campaign marks the third year of the International Diabetes Federation’s five-year focus on ‘Diabetes education and prevention’, the theme chosen for the period 2009-2013. Participants formed a human chain in and around Maddipakkam and Vadapalani, carrying placard and distributing brochures’ to people. The group interacted with the public and spoke on the importance of proper care for diabetic patients and detection of the disease in its early stages. The event was supported by the Rotary Club of Chennai Info-city. Commenting on the occasion, Dr D Rajendran, chief medical officer, Vasan Eye Care Hospital, Madipakkam said, “ A recent WHO report estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes and almost 80 per cent of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Without intervention, this number is likely to double in the coming years. Given this situation, it becomes imperative that the medical community step forward to educate people on the need to prevent diabetes in the country. We are proud to do our bit for the cause!” The group reached out to a number of people during the activity, educating and encouraging them to follow a healthy practice of managing the disease.
