Chennai/Rajasthan: A police inspector from Chennai's Maduravoyal Police Station has been shot dead by a suspected robber with his own service revolver in Rajasthan's Pali district at 2:30 am on Wednesday morning, the police said.
Inspector Periyapandi (48) was a member of a special team of five police officers who had come to Jaitaran to catch the suspects in the Kolathur burglary that took place a few weeks ago.
During the scuffle, another inspector TM Munisekar was also injured and is currently undergoing treatment.
Police source said, "Today, a police team reached the spot where the accused were hiding and when they tried to nab them, a scuffle broke out and the accused snatched Periyapandi's pistol and shot him form point blank range. After the incident, the three accused managed to flee from the spot."
Senior police officials from Tamil Nadu will be heading to Rajasthan soon to probe the matter. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Police have assured that they will cooperate Tamil Nadu Police team in the probe and take action against the absconding culprits.
"On Tuesday night, a team of Chennai Police came and conducted a raid in Ramavas village of Jaitran Police Station to nab Nathuram. During the raid, they faced stiff resistance from the culprits. However, four police officers managed to escape but Periyapandi was caught inside the compound wall. A gun shot was heard and later the policemen found Periyapandi lying dead on the ground. The shot was fired from a police weapon and we are conducting a probe into the incident," said Deepak Bhargav, SP, Pali district.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for Periyapandi's family and will also bear the educational expenses of the slain police officers' sons.
Banu Rekha, wife of the slain police officer, said, "Rajasthan robbers are dangerous...I asked him not to go alone. Tamil Nadu Police should have sent at least 100 officers. They said Rajasthan police were helping and that’s why they sent only five officers. I don't know why he volunteered to join the police team."
It may be noted that two accused -- Nathuram and Dinesh Choudhary -- drilled a hole from the roof and stole valuables from Mahalakshmi jewellery store in Kolathur. Initial investigation revealed that the accused belong to North India had rented the place in the same building. Though the jewellery store owner did not have their details, CCTV footage helped the police identify the accused. On Monday, four relatives of Nathuram were detained and the Tamil Nadu Police formed a special team to nab two more accused.
