Hyderabad: Listing out various reasons such as borrowing from private moneylenders, crop failure for two consecutive years, indiscriminate digging of borewells, family disputes, prolonged illness, burden of private loans etc, the Telangana government has informed the Hyderabad High Court that expenses towards lavish marriages and children's education in private schools were also the reasons for farmers' suicides.
The government filed a counter-affidavit in a petition by the Vyavasaya Jana Chaitanya Samiti, seeking to direct the government to take preventive measures to stop the suicides of financially distressed farmers.
The government also informed the court about the steps they are taking to help farmers like the ex-gratia that was increased to Rs 5 lakh and awareness programmes being conducted to educate farmers.
Telangana government has declared drought in 231 mandals. Farmers are in great distress. Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nizamabad and Rangareddy are worst affected districts.
