BANGALORE: With literally no Opposition in the Assembly, at least three ministerial aspirants among the ruling BJP Appacchu Ranjan, C T Ravi and Raju Gowda had a field day when they eulogised Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's government for its remarkable performance.
"The decision to come out with a separate budget for agriculture is historic. It is not merely a separate additional sheet of papers as unfairly described by the Opposition parties but a major step towards giving focus and thrust," Ravi said in his speech. In his view, depositing Rs10,000 in two instalments in the bank accounts of the farmers in order to enable him to meet the sowing expenses was a muchneeded relief. "It is very difficult for the farmers to see such a huge amount in one go. Our chief minister is aware of the daytoday needs and problems of the farmers and hence he has come out with this scheme," Ravi asserted.

Shivaraj Tangadagi, former minister from among the independents, however, described the separate budget for agriculture as a cruel joke as well as a gimmick. "You come to north Karnataka. Paddy prices have fallen. Farmers are facing problems from middlemen. Till today, neither officials nor ministers have visited the farmers. Is this your commitment for farmers?" Tangadi asked angrily. He also took the government to task for ignoring the district and taluk roads which are essential for the farmers to carry their produce to APMCs.

Raju Gowda, one among the 11 MLAs who had lost their membership and got it back after the Supreme Court's intervention, was lavish in his praise of the chief minister. "Our leader has commitment for public welfare," he said.
