New Delhi: Kenyan police have claimed that they have arrested Abdul Karim Tunda, one of India's most-wanted terror suspects, and a member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Anti-terrorism police in Mombasa said they had detained Tunda and would be turning him over to prosecutors for possible extradition to India, news agency AFP reported.
"We arrested him in Mombasa on Thursday," a senior police official told reporters on condition of anonymity. "He is wanted for the bombings in Mumbai. He will be handed over because he is on the wanted list."
Moshis Baya, the editor of Kenya TV network, said the police had told journalists that Tunda was under arrest but gave no details.
LeT is the main suspect in July 11 train bombings in Mumbai.
Mumbai Police on Friday arrested three persons in case. Tunda is wanted in connection with a series of bomb blasts in Delhi and neighbouring states between 1996 and 1998.
His faction of the group is believed to have bases in Bangladesh and Pakistan, according to those reports.
Tunda’s LeT faction is accused of carrying out blasts using improvised explosive devises (IEDs). Police allege his group is responsible for several IED blasts in Mumbai in the past.
Security agencies allege Tunda’s group uses ammonium nitrate in making bombs. Ammonium nitrate, investigators claim, was used in the Mumbai blasts.
Officials say Mumbai blasts bear the imprint of the modus operandi of the Tunda faction. According to them, no other group has the capacity to hit multiple targets in a day.
