Chennai: The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has quashed a case of corruption and abetment to suicide filed against former Tamil Nadu minister Agri Krishnamoorthy.
The case was filed in 2015 following the suicide of a senior agricultural officer - S Muthukumarasamy.
The case was quashed on the grounds that there was no direct evidence to suggest that Krishnamoorthy had demanded bribe money from the agricultural officer who allegedly committed suicide unable to bear the pressure to pay the amount.
The judge said that the case had been booked based on hearsay witnesses and there was no evidence to show that the then minister had spoken to Muthukumarasamy over the phone or in person. The officer had also not left behind a suicide note .
Muthukumarasamy's suicide had triggered a political controversy with the ruling AIADMK forced to act against Krishnamoorthy following uproar by the opposition. He was subsequently dropped from the cabinet and arrested by the CB-CID.
