New Delhi: Three poachers killed a male tiger on the banks of the Dhela river in the Terai West forest division of the Corbett Tiger Reserve early on Sunday morning, media reports said on Wednesday. The site of the incident was within 7 km of the high-security reserve in Tehri Garhwal.
The tiger was shot in the eye with two bullets fired from a .315-bore rifle, the report said, adding that the injured male tiger attacked one of the poachers, Inder Singh of Durgapur village, before it died.
The injured poacher has been admitted to a hospital in Kashipur in a serious condition. The two other accused have been absconding.
Police have registered a case against Inder Singh and his accomplices. The tiger was about eight years old and three meters long. The bullets were recovered from its head on Tuesday during post-mortem.
According to official records, the Corbett Reserve has 137 tigers. However, in actual count tiger population is estimated to have fallen to 50.
