Mamata calls off strike | HC warns
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's 24-hour deadline to the government ends at 1600 hrs IST on Wednesday.

New Delhi:Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday called off the party's plan to organise a strike in West Bengal after a High Court order.

Mamata had called for the strike to protest against the Tata Motors' small car factory in Singur and given the West Bengal government time till 1600 hrs IST on Wednesday to cancel the project.

Banerjee has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee asking him to return the land acquired by the government from the farmers for Tata Motors new plant in Singur, before the deadline ends.

She says that if the government does not return the land to the farmers then she will continue her fast and her party will go ahead with the 48-hour statewide bandh starting on December 21.

Mamata Banerjee has been on a hunger strike for seventeen days.

Her announcement for the statewide strike had come shortly after the Chief Minister ordered a CBI inquiry into the alleged rape and killing of a 18-year-old girl in Singur on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister had also asked Banerjee to call off the bandh and her hunger strike.
