MANGALORE: The board of studies (BOS) for Kannada in Mangalore University has decided to remove the derogatory words from ‘Gandhi Banda’, a non-detailed textbook, after it received objections on some of the remarks made about Vishwakarma and Shivalli Brahmin communities. The textbook, authored by H Nagaveni, had received objections on some of the words against the communities. Dakshina Kannada District Gold Smiths Association (DKDGSA), Vishwakarma Okkoota of Udupi and Shivalli Bhrahmanara Sangha had raised objection against depicting their members as villains. BOS chairman Prof Abhayakumar said that the textbook would be edited after seeking permission from the author of the book. The words referred to as derogatory to the community will be removed, he added. He said that the award-winning novel was adopted by the BOS in 2011 to BA second semester of Mangalore University (MU) with the permission of the author. The author had only edited her 12-year-old novel and cut it short to 220 pages from 390 pages, he said. When contacted, author of the novel H Nagaveni said editing a book is equal to killing an author. “I will think when the BOS from Mangalore University seeks permission to edit the book,” she added.DKDGSA Vice-President Bollar Mohan Kumar said that the book defames the value of Janivara (sacred thread) of Vishwakarma community and derogatory words had been used against the community. “The book does not deserve to be studied in a university,” he said.MU V-C Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy said that the book was prescribed by BOS and it has every right to decide on the textbook.
