With strict monitoring by the Horticorp and the Central Committee of the market, the Agricultural Urban Wholesale Market (AUWM) at Maradu has now become a haven for farmers to auction their produce.According to the AUWM officials, the Horticorp and the Central Committee of the Market officials are directly monitoring the auction to ensure that farmers get a decent value for their produce. Sherly A Baby, deputy director of AUWM, said they have been closely monitoring the auction process, especially during this festival season. Farmers are given a chance to auction their vegetables and other harvest under the market development scheme of the AUWM on every Wednesday.” To ensure that the farmers are reaping benefit, the Horticorp has fixed a base price. The auction price cannot go below the fixed price. Owing to this, the bidders  will not able to reduce the price of the vegetables beyond a point,” she said.The official added that if the bidders refuse  to buy the agricultural produce for the fixed price, the horticorp will purchase it from the farmers.The scheme has clearly been successful as the turn over of this particular scheme has increased to `71 lakh. Earlier, it was one  lakh. Also to bring in more help to the farmers, the AUWM will add four more panchayats into the scheme.  “Now we have eight groups of farmers in the  Karumaloor, Alangad, Mulanthuruthy, Parakkadavu, Nedumbassery ,Chengamanad and Chellanam panchayats. The Agriculture Department has given us permission to include four more panchayats to the scheme. They have sanctioned `2 lakh for adding these four panchayats which is located within a radius of 50-km from the city,” she said.Though the bidders in our panchayat are demanding the vegetables for low price, we are getting decent money from the AUWM for the vegetable produce.
