MEA Assures Speedy Probe Into Congolese Man's Murder

New Delhi: After the African diplomatic community threatened to boycott Africa Day celebrations in India, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has asked for a speedy probe into the murder of a 23-year-old Congolese national in Delhi.

"We will ensure justice is done and stringent punishment is given to those involved. The secretary also pointed out that all criminal act should not be seen as racially motivated. We will ensure that African students continue to find a welcome home in India. Sushma Swaraj is personally monitoring the matter," MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Swaraj, too, tweeted saying state governments will be directed to ensure security to African nationals.

MoS External Affairs VK Singh will be meeting the heads of missions of African countries to assure them of strict action and speedy probe into incidents involving African nationals.

Congolese national MK Olivier was beaten to death in Delhi on May 20 following which the African diplomatic core had lodged strong protests with the government.

The incident took place around 11:45 PM when he had a heated argument with a group of three persons. Following the argument, the group pounced on Olivier. He tried to escape but they chased him and attacked him with stones.
