CHENNAI: Greater Chennai is all set to take ‘greater’ care of it’s newly acquired water bodies. After a clamping of the illegal dumping of sewage into rivers, within the city, Chennai Metro Water is all set to extend this to the suburbs. The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has set a deadline of 15 days for privately operated sewer tankers and lorries, who operate in the newly added areas of Chennai Corporation to register themselves. This move is expected to enable Metro Water to regulate the final discharge into sewage treatment plants and away from waterways.Warning the private operators against discharging sewage into unauthorised places and waterways , CMWSSB managing director Dr K Gopal said that the maintenance of sewerage facilities in the newly added areas of the Chennai Corporation including removing of sewage from septic tanks and disposing it at authorised sewage treatment plant had been regulated as per Section 61 (1) & (2) of Metro Water Act 1978.“Certain sewer tankers or lorries of private operators operating in areas that were formerly local bodies, are found discharging sewage in waterways and in unauthorised places. This is a public nuisance,” he said.They should first register with the Metro Water Board so that they can regulate the final discharge of sewage to places such as Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam and Perungudi Sewage Treatment plants, Gopal added.He also said that the sewer lorries operating within the newly formed corporation limits had to register with the Metro Water Board No 1 on Pumping Station Road in Chintadripet or at the nodal offices at Tiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasarwalkkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Solinganallur. “Failure to comply with this notice will attract action as per rules,” he added.
