Mexico landslide leaves about 1000 dead

Mexico City: In Mexico, a landslide has left about a thousand dead. Bad weather has so far hampered the rescue operations, however, President Felipe Calderon has assured that the rescue teams would reach the venue soon.

The landslide was caused by heavy rain overnight and buried some 300 houses in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, civil defence officials said on Tuesday.

The landslide happened in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, officials said, but no details about deaths and injuries were immediately available.

President Felipe Calderon also said that soldiers and marine troops have been sent to help in the rescue operations.

The federal government expressed sincere consternation after the events occurred in Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca where rains caused the landslide of a hill.
