New Delhi: The Centre has written to states to increase the amount of incentive for intercaste marriages to Rs 50,000, pledging a 50 per cent share itself.
Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar told reporters that the step has been taken to encourage such marriages as they play a very crucial role in mitigating caste feelings.
''We want people to change their mindsets, and if they married into other castes, that would go a long way in achieving this objective,'' she said.
She said her ministry had written to state governments to enhance monetary incentives for such marriages, 50 per cent of which would be borne by the Centre.
At present, she said, states were giving varying amounts as incentives, which, however, was not much, so the Ministry now thinks that this amount should now be at least Rs 50,000.
Replying to questions, the Minister said the government was also working on a scheme for providing education to dalit children in elite public schools.
