The Shiv Sena-led BMC has, in principle, accepted a proposal to ban display of lingerie on mannequins in Mumbai. They say that such displays excite men, thereby endangering the safety of women. Fashion designer Rina Dhaka joined IBNLive readers for an interaction on the matter.
Q. Is the ban on lingerie mannequins nothing but paranoid moral policing? Asked by: Isha
A. Off-course, it is.
Q. If men who run our civic bodies have any shame, they will not ban advts they must ban the sick minds who think that women are objects and not people who deserve respect. Asked by: Anil
A. I just think its very absurd. Banning is nothing to do with it. The answer is education.
Q. Mumbai civic body itself is run by men, who have a warped view of women. Again its their upbringing which is at fault. Am going to be charged of being repetitive, but, pray let me ask, what does a tiny 4 year old who did not wear lingerie do, to be raped? Asked by: Renu
A. Yes, this is absurd to connect it.
Q. Is a ban required? Can not our men folk be educated to respect women from childhood? Here it is women at fault, as they do not instill values of respect from childhood itself. It can be seen when in a BEST bus women make their grown up kids sit on the ladies seat. Women are the worst enemies of women. this issue is a non-issue. The core issue is lack of respect for women, for which women themselves are at fault. Asked by: Renu
A. I think its a human challenge. It will just impact the trade.
Q. It is a general science that Women get attracted to powerful, rich and masculine men and Men would get attracted to Thinly Clad (clothes) of Women. Would you be recommend the nature and change human metabolism? Miss Worlds, Miss Universe or Miss Earth are all decided after bikini or lingerie or Swimsuit rounds. Asked by: Balu
A. Frankly, Miss Worlds, Miss Universe or Miss Earth have a choice, they have to look hot to win the crown but this can't happen in streets.
Q. Why don't you allow live woman to stand in front of the shops with lingerie it would be a better advertisement for the lingerie? Asked by: Prathap
A. Haha I don't think that's a good idea. Trade fashion shows is a good idea but audiences should be mature to take it.
Q. They may not excite men, but it indeed sows the seed which might lead to women's safety being endangered. All right thinking people would indeed welcome it, why only women, it should be banned even for men. Asked by: SE
A. I don't think the ban is needed. BMC should do a door to door step survey what needs to be removed. Banning mannequins will affect our creativity.
Q. Why isn't the liberal component of Mumbai's civil society being vocal against this right-wing moral policing? We are losing our freedoms every day. Kudos to you for speaking out. But what about others including members from your fashion fraternity who are going to be directly impacted? Asked by: Anirban Banerjee
A. Off-course, the trade will be impacted. In terms of marketing, creativity. BMC should rather educate through street plays about changing mindset. Banning mannequins is like dictatorship. This is absurd.
