Mumbai: Mumbai Police on Thursday registered an attempt to murder case under IPC Section 307 after a fisherman was shot at by an Indian Navy Vessel.
The incident took place in May when a fisherman was injured after he was shot at by an Immediate Support Vessel of Indian Navy which was on a coastal security patrol in the offshore development area at the Bombay High.
The fishermen association has alleged that the Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) was responsible for the incident.
However, Navy said that while providing protection to the oil rig, they had spotted a fishing boat and despite repeated warnings the boat did not move out of the prohibited area.
PRO, Indian Navy, Captain DK Sharma said, “The Navy is very much aware of it, we are doing a BOI (Board of Inquiry), all the facts will come out soon. We immediately provided first aid, rescued the man by helicopter & took him to hospital. We did open fire as warning shot, one of bullets ricocheted and hit the fisherman, it wasn't intentional."
“They were advised to pick up their nets and leave, all boats did follow our instructions except for one boat. Incident happened in Bombay High area on 17th, few fishermen came in ODA area which is not supposed to be used by mariners," he added.
