Mumbai: Former KEM Hospital nurse and rape survivor Aruna Shanbaug is suffering from pneumonia and is under observation. She has been lying in a vegetative state for the last 40 years.

Aruna was raped and brutally assaulted by a hospital sweeper on November 27, 1973 . Aruna had suffered brain damage after she was strangled by the rapist with a dog chain.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected a petition to allow mercy killing of Aruna.

The apex court had rejected the mercy killing petition of Aruna, a semi-comatose rape victim in Mumbai's King Edward Memorial Hospital, while praising the hospital and staff for taking unprecedented care of her.

The court had however held that passive euthanasia is permissible under supervision of law in exceptional circumstances but active euthanasia is not permitted under the law.
