Mumbai: Millions of Mumbai commuters heaved a sigh of relief on Tuesday as suburban train drivers called off their strike after 36 hours. This came after Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil's intervention.
Patil told the striking motormen that his government would present the workers' demands before the Railway authorities. He also assured them that the cases against the motormen would be taken back.
Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has said that a fast track committee is looking into the demands of the railway employees. The committee has been asked to submit its report by June 15.
The second day of strike by drivers of local trains crippled Mumbai again, causing huge traffic jams and forcing people to stay at home.
Railway authorities said only 20 per cent suburban trains operated because of the strike by motormen, who are demanding hike in their salaries and allowances.
The railways have apologised for the inconvenience caused to the travelling public in Mumbai on Tuesday due to the strike.
