Mumbai: World Series Hockey on Thursday unveiled Mumbai Warriors as the new franchise of the troubled league even as 12 star Indian players have reportedly decided to skip the tournament in favour of a national camp for Olympic qualifiers.
WSH announced that the team will be skippered by local player Adrian D'Souza and Andrew Meredith would be the coach of the side.
The organisers mentioned Yuvraj Walmiki as one of the players of the side when the youngster has reportedly quit the league along with 11 other Indian players.
Former India captain Viren Rasquina along with international stars like Argentina's Pedro Ibarra and South Korea's Sung Min were named as the other players of the side.
ProSport Holdings, a consortium led by Ashish Bharatram (SRF Group) and Harish Thawani (Nimbus), was declared as the owner of the franchise.
The franchise will shortly announce a leading media and entertainment player as a third partner.
"It's an honour indeed for us to get associated with an initiative that aims to promote our national game of hockey. I am sure the World Series Hockey will not only provide a huge platform to the young and budding hockey players to rub their shoulders with the best in the world but will also rekindle passion for our national game in the hearts of one billion people of India," Bharatram, said.
Thawani, Chairman of Nimbus Communications said, "Mumbai has a proud tradition of hockey, having produced numerous Olympians, and won several national titles. Mumbai Warriors is a tribute to the spirit of Mumbai and its proud legacy of sporting excellence.
