The nationwide mobile number portability is likely to be implemented from July 3. This move comes as a boon for mobile phone users as they can now retain their numbers while shifting between states and circles.
According to a report in The Hindu, full mobile number portability was initially slated to be operational by May 3. However, it could not be done because of the technical requirements for the implementation of the same.
The Cellular Operators Association of India had sought an extension to allow telecom operators to make technical changes to implement the service.
For the implementation of MNP, DoT had amended the national numbering plan, asking telecom operators to allow their subscribers to dial on to mobile numbers within the same circle as well as inter circle without any prefix. This, in turn, required operators to put in place certain hardware and software to facilitate the process of full mobile number portability.
Once rolled out, the full MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of the country even when they change their operator or state. At present, MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their number in the same telecom circle.
