CHENNAI: Students of the 1(TN) Armd Sqn NCC of the DG Vaishnav College were in for a surprise on their annual motorcycle rally across TN.The cadets, who had picked cancer awareness as this year’s theme, were approached by many women in rural areas, with requests for information about cancer.“Our idea was to focus on ill-effects of tobacco and cancer.But in many towns and villages, women asked about cervical and breast cancer,” said Lt Dr S Santhosh Baboo, Associate NCC Officer at the college.Baboo and a team of 21 cadets from the college were flagged off on this year’s rally, conducted in association with Hero MotoCorp, by Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy on Feb 4, World Cancer Day. They covered 21 districts in 16 days. A survey on cancer awareness, carried out in these districts, was released by S Narasimhan, Principal of the College, and the first copy was received by Adyar Cancer Institute Chairperson Dr V Shantha. A booklet on this year’s expedition was released, by college secretary P Haridas and Duraisamy received the first copy.
