BANGALORE: An eighty-year-old man suffering from cardiac problem for the past four years and recently diagnosed with bladder cancer got a new lease of life at a city based hospital when a team of doctors treated him.The team treated the bladder cancer by creating a new bladder using patients’ own intestine and treated the heart disease simultaneously. A six hour surgery was performed on him.S R Subramaniam had a history of severe aortic stenosis problem. He was advised to undergo a surgery but was avoiding it from the past four years, until recently he passed blood when he tried to pass urine. After diagnosis, the specialists immediately prescribed him to undergo a bladder resection (removal of bladder) surgery followed by creation of new bladder.“Though we advised the patient for an immediate bladder reconstructive surgery, another major issue we faced was his heart condition. Operating on the bladder cancer alone may have exposed the patient to the risk of heart failure,” explained Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon, Fortis Hospitals. The patient is fit and has resumed his normal lifestyle.
