THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is not for installing the announced major garbage processing plant for the capital city at Vilappilsala,considering the stiff opposition of local people, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Thursday."Both the State Government and City Corporation have a credibility loss in the issue. The people cannot be blamed for it. We have to find a new place for installing the plant,” he said, at a post-Cabinet briefing. Chandy pointed out that the Government had tried its level best to implement the Supreme Court order to reopen the Vilappilsala garbage plant, but everyone know what had happened.“We can make another attempt for an entry if necessary. But it will not work,’’ he said.The Chief Minister said that another special meeting of the Cabinet will be held on June 4, to finalise details of installation of the modern garbage processing plants at Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode as well as the additionally sanctioned ones at Thrissur, Kottayam and Kollam. “All the plants will be installed and operated in association with the local bodies. And more importantly, the proposals are for zero-waste, non-pollutant and environment-friendly projects,” Chandy emphasised.“Before that, a successful model for managing wastes will be implement at a suitable place, so as to dispel any doubts in the minds of the people,” he said. Admitting that the installation of the modern plants will take some time, Chandy said that measures to manage wastes on a short-term basis in view of the nearing monsoon will be the top priority of the Government.“Today’s Cabinet meet had discussed all issues related to garbage management in detail. The special Cabinet meet slated for June 4 is also in view of the Neyyatinkara bypoll, since any announcements now would be improper,” he said.
