THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Kerala minister and veteran United Democratic Front leader R. Balakrishna Pillai, who was released from jail early this month under an amnesty, said that the Oommen Chandy government did not grant him any favours when he was imprisoned."All what was given to me was done by the previous Left government and I did not enjoy anything from the present Chandy government. I was a prisoner in the A category."The Left is airing baseless allegations and as per jail rules, I should have been released 18 days before, but I was very particular that the present government should not have any problems because of me," said Pillai at his first media interaction after his release. The 76-year-old Pillai, chief of the United Democratic Front (UDF) constituent Kerala Congress-Pillai, was sentenced by the apex court to a year's imprisonment for corruption in February. The case was pursued for more than a decade by former chief minister and Left leader V.S. Achuthanandan."I have nothing against Achuthanandan but he has the penchant of naming me in any case that happens in the state. That was how my name was linked by him when a school teacher at the school which I own was attacked. Now this government has handed over the case to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and I welcome it," said Pillai.Incidentally Achuthanandan's petition against Pillai being given amnesty came up Friday in the apex court and was posted to Dec 9.Pillai declined to comment on the lawsuit.
