New Delhi: After India’s official entry to the Oscars, Eklavya struck controversy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of USA has given Film Federation of India (FFI) time till October 17 to reaffirm its original entry in foreign language category or send an alternate entry.
The FFI is meeting on Sunday to decide whether they want to replace the movie or let Eklavya be the official nomination for the awards.
Last month, the Bombay High Court had noted that prima facie the selection of Eklavya as India's entry for the Oscars looked biased.
A petition filed by filmmaker Bhavna Talwar had challenged the selection of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film for the award ceremony.
The Division bench of Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud had issued notices to FFI.
Talwar, whose film Dharm was also in the running to be selected as India's entry for the Oscars, had filed the petition alleging that some members of the FFI were close to Vidhu Vinod Chopra and so the selection of Eklavya is not a fair one.
A letter from the Academy had expressed concern over the "confusing situation" that had developed regarding India’s entry.
The letter also asked FFI to have more defensible internal standards for selecting entries for the Academy Awards.
In response to the Academy’s letter, FFI Chairman Vinod Pande said India had strong democratic values and high respect for judiciary which has every right to get involved in giving justice to the aggrieved.
Incidentally, the next date for hearing the case is October 17.
