New Delhi: Police in China have arrested 35 people alleged to be part of a terrorist ring that planned to bomb the Beijing Olympics, and kidnap athletes, foreign journalists and tourists.
Chinese police conducted raids in the far western Xinjiang region and carried out the arrests.
They seized explosives and what they called 'jehadi' literature.
The Chinese government claims that those arrested belong to an Islamic separatist group in the region.
The Ministry of Public Security also claimed to have foiled earlier plots to attack civilian and military targets in Shanghai, Beijing and other cities.
China keeps a tight grip on the oil-rich region of Xinjiang which borders Central Asia.
Separatists there have been demanding greater autonomy and a loosening of restrictions on Muslim religious worship.
