BHUBANESWAR: Sambalpur’s Roshan Sahu has emerged topper in medical wing of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) results of which were announced here on Thursday. Pratik Gourav of Cuttack topped the engineering branch. While 56,841 students had applied for the engineering branches, 53,936 have been put on the merit list. For the MBBS branch, 2,203 qualified out of the total 24,411. The JEE was held on two dates earlier this month and the announcement of the results has come in one of the shortest time possible, close to a fortnight. Industries Minister Raghunath Mohanty, who released the results, said the State Government will take a call on the counselling process on Friday. Last year, a web-based de-centralised counselling process was introduced but received resistance from the private engineering colleges which registered massive vacancies. While the nature of counselling will be known in a day, the JEE Committee has decided to start the process from July. By the time, Orissa JEE counselling starts, counselling for IITs and NITs would have reached their fag-end. It has been timed in such a manner that students are not troubled, Secretary, Industries Department, T Ramachandru said. The JEE Committee has been asked to start the counselling process basing on the approval accorded by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) latest by June 30. The initial process will be based on the number of colleges and corresponding number of seats made available by the national council as on June 30.Asked about the AICTE norm of 50 percent marks in the Plus Two examination as minimum eligibility for admission, the Industries Secretary said the Government will wait for the Orissa High Court decision since it has been challenged by the private colleges. According to statistics available, just about 18,000 students bagged second division and above (which is 50 percent and above) in the last Plus Two examination. The total number of seats in the engineering colleges stands at close to 38,000.
