Robbers work, say public; councillor blames locals

Over 15 stray dogs were allegedly poisoned to death at Rajiv Gandhi Salai on Nallampalayam Road on Sunday.

While locals said the animals were poisoned by robbers, the ward councillor has blamed the residents for the killing. The stray dogs died after eating pieces of meat laced with Furadan, a pesticide, allegedly left along the wayside in the locality by some miscreants on Saturday night. On Sunday, over 15 stray dogs, three hens, four crows and a cat were found dead, triggering panic in the area.

Robbers poisoned the stray dogs so that they could rob houses in the area, a local resident claimed. However, the local councillor has claimed otherwise. “The residents approached me twice to find a solution to the stray dog menace in their locality. The dogs apparently attacked some persons on their way home at night,” explained ward 45 councillor M Gunasekaran.

The councillor has lodged a complaint against four local residents with Saravanampatty police, alleging that they were the ones who poisoned the animals.

Meanwhile, Saravanampatty police said Rajiv Gandhi Salai, a predominantly middle-class locale, was not a crime-prone area and that there has been no such movement of anti-socials there.

There have been recent cases of stray dogs biting children in the locality, sources said. On Monday, some of the carcasses were apparently buried by the locals themselves before the corporation was informed.

“After getting the information, we recovered more than 15 carcasses and buried them in the Vellalore dump yard, a corporation source said.

A corporation official said that four dogs survived after being treated.
