New Delhi: Pakistan's admission on Thursday that the Mumbai carnage was "partly" planned on its territory brings to an end 79 days of Islamabad's flip-flop on the involvement of elements from that country in the terror attacks.
Here is a timeline of Pakistan's response to repeated Indian statements that its nationals were involved in the November 26-29 Mumbai attacks that claimed more than 170 lives, including those of 26 foreigners, and wounded over 300:
December 2, 2008: "We have not been given any tangible proof to say that he is definitely a Pakistani. I very much doubt it...that he is a Pakistani." - President Asif Ali Zardari on Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the Mumbai attacks.
January 7, 2009: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sacks his National Security Advisor Maj. Gen. (retd) Mahmud Ali Durrani, for "irresponsible behaviour" in admitting Kasab is a Pakistani.
January 10: "Though it's their internal matter, it was a big intelligence failure and now we'll have to defend two countries." -- Gilani.
January 15: "India has not given any evidence on Mumbai attacks but just information." -- Gilani.
January 18: "So far, the leads shared with me by the investigators go out of the country...We are not registering a criminal case right now. Let the preliminary report come and if prima facie something substantial comes, we would convert it into a criminal case." -- Interior Minister Rehman Malik
January 30: "Pakistani territory was not used so far as the investigators have made their conclusions. Pakistani territory not used. It could have been some other place. Not the UK as well. Because these were the two places I was concerned about. They categorically informed me that UK was not involved. Pakistan was not involved. Its territories were not used for planning this operation." -- Wajid Shamshul Hasan, Pakistan's high commissioner to Britain.
January 30: "How can he comment? We can't right now. If the PM cannot comment, then how could he? It is only the job of the interior ministry. I assure you that my soil will not be used for terrorism and if anyone is found guilt, the law will take its own course." -- Gilani pulling up Hasan for his remarks.
February 9: "The meeting, however, observed that without substantial evidence from India it will be exceedingly difficult to complete the investigation and proceed with the case." -- Statement issued after a meeting of the cabinet's defence panel chaired by Gilani.
February 12: "Some part of the conspiracy has taken place in Pakistan. We have located those locations which were used by the terrorists before launching themselves."-- Rehman Malik.
