BANGALORE: After Palike’s notices to traders at Russell Market did not bear fruits, the civic body has resorted to new methods to evacuate traders from the market. The BBMP has now denied water supply to the market and has locked the toilets on the premises. Recently, the traders had pooled in funds and had arranged for generator facility, which, however, is not serving the purpose. Around 120 mutton, 40 fish and 16 flower stalls are carrying on their business without electricity. To add to their woes, the Palike has stopped the water supply to the market.“We were not affected initially. Only fruit and vegetables vendors were facing problems. Without adequate power supply, we are forced to work in the dark. This has resulted in many injuries to traders several times. Also, due to the lack of water, the meat and fish stock raises stench. Customers have stopped coming to the market. We are forced to buy water from outside, but it is too expensive. We are not able to afford it,” said Venkatesh, member, Fish Merchants’ Association.BBMP Special Commissioner (Projects and Finance) KR Niranjan said he was not aware of the present situation at Russell Market and would instruct the chief engineer to look into the matter.
