“During the unification of Karnataka, if the Mysore state had raised its voice along with us, we wouldn’t have missed many regions which are not with Karnataka now,” senior Kannada journalist Patil Putappa regretted on Saturday.
He was speaking at a programme organised by Karnataka Ekikarana Samiti to mark the 56th anniversary of the unification of the Karnataka, where he was felicitated by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, former Chief Ministers B S Yeddyurappa and D V Sadananda Gowda.
“Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri laid the foundation stone for the ‘Upper Krishna Project’ on May 22, 1964 and the initial estimation of the cost of the project was `298 crore. Even after so many years, with funds up to `15,000 crore, the project is not yet completed. “There are hardly any voices raised against the government for this delay,” he lamented.
He felt that anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare should have stayed away from politics and should have continued his drive against corruption. He also spoke against the politicians who go on tours to foreign countries.
Former minister Ramachandra Gowda and Sahitya Parishat President Pundalik Halambi urged the government to nominate Kannada Chalavali leader Vatal Nagaraj to the Legislative Council. Replying to his request, CM Shettar assured them that he would to look in to the request.
Nagaraj handed over a letter to the CM to institute a national award in the name of Patil Putappa.
