People in Kerala reel under impact of rain-havoc
Rail transport has been disrupted at many places due to landslides.

Thiruvananthapuram: Two rain-related deaths were reported from Pathanamthitta in south Kerala on Saturday taking the toll to 82 since onset of monsoon on May 26 as some parts continued to be battered with landslips disrupting the train traffic on Kochi-Thrissur stretch.

Official sources said 30 lives were lost in the current spell of rains over the past 12 days.

Even as parts of the state experienced a slight let-up in rains during the day, life in northern districts of Wayanad, Malappuram, Kannur and Kozhikode remained grim.

Revenue Minister K P Rajendran sought an immediate Central assistance of Rs 18 crore to manage the situation.

Several trains were running late and some of them cancelled or rescheduled as earth under the railway track was washed away due to heavy rains at Chalakkudi near Thrissur midnight last night.

Major rivers including Chaliyar, Bhrathapuzha and Periyar are flowing above the "danger levels".

About one lakh people in 484 villages were affected by rains and floods. Over 6,000 people had been shifted to 92 relief camps.

Two landslips were reported from Kannur and Kozhikode, where the the highest rainfall of 27 cm was reported in the last 24 hours ending 0830 hrs on Saturday.

The National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) team was assisting in relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
