PM Modi Carries Out First Blast Of Shinkun La Tunnel In Drass | 5 Things About World’s Highest Tunnel
The 4.1km twin-tube tunnel aims to provide all-weather connectivity between Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday carried out the “first blast”, marking the start of construction of the Shinkun La tunnel from Ladakh’s Drass virtually.

The 4.1km twin-tube tunnel aims to provide all-weather connectivity between Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Ladakh. The tunnel would also ensure swift and efficient movement of the armed forces and equipment, and foster economic and social development in Ladakh.

Here are 5 things about the tunnel:

– The Shinkun La tunnel project consists of a 4.1-kilometre twin-tube tunnel which connects Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh’s Leh via the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road.

– The project is to be constructed at an altitude of around 15,800 feet and is expected to be completed in four years.

– Once completed, Shinkun La tunnel would be the world’s highest, surpassing China’s Mila tunnel at 15,590 ft.

– The construction of the tunnel will boost military mobility and logistics support for deployed forces in the Ladakh sector as the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road will provide the third connectivity option to Ladakh.

– Connectivity between Nimmu and Darcha was achieved in March 2024, and the road is currently being blacktopped.

PM Modi was in Kargil today. He paid a visit to Kargil War Memorial to commemorate the 25th anniversary of ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’, India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 war.

He laid a floral wreath at the War Memorial and paid homage and tributes to the Kargil War bravehearts, who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of “Operation Vijay”, declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh. The day is observed as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the war.
