The foundation stone for the prestigious Kochi Metro Rail project is likely to be laid in September.
According to the officials concerned, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who will be in the city to inaugurate the Emerging Kerala Investors Meet will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 5,126-crore Metro Rail project. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will be signed next month.
“Once the MoU is signed and foundation stone laid, the DMRC will start the work of the Metro Rail. It will begin with the preliminary works for the construction of viaducts by October,” DMRC sources said.
The MoU between the KMRL and DMRC will have the similar clauses and conditions that were included in the agreement signed by DMRC and Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Limited (JMRC) for the Jaipur Metro Rail project.
The DMRC is the consultant as well as implementing agency for the Jaipur Metro rail project. The first phase of the Jaipur Metro which consists of the Green Line, including the civil works, rail line, depot and traction is progressing. The 25-km-long Kochi Metro Rail from Aluva to Petta will have a total of 22 stations. “Since the DMRC is the executing agency for both the projects, the MoU will not have any additional clauses,” sources said. Among the ongoing Metro works, the reconstruction of the side-bays of the Ernakulam North Rail Overbridge (RoB) will be completed by September end. “Both the motor bays of the North RoB will be commissioned by September end. Then the dismantling of the main bridge will begin. The reconstruction of the bridge will be carried out in tune with the alignment of the proposed Metro Rail as both are interconnected,” an official spokesperson with DMRC said.
The other major metro rail related works - the construction of the new RoB connecting Salim Rajan Road and Rajaji Road- is likely to be commissioned by 2013 January.
“The widening of the major roads, Banerjee Road from North to Madhava Pharmacy Junction and MG Road from Madhava Pharmacy to Jose Junction will begin once the land is handed over to DMRC,” he said.
