New Delhi: The US-based academician Robert P Goldman who translated epic Valmiki Ramayan into English and noted indologist George Cardona were given certificates of honour by President Pranab Mukherjee for their contribution to Sanskrit at a function on Friday.
Goldman and Cardona were among 57 proponents of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian who were conferred certificates of honour and 'Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman to young scholars' for the years 2012 and 2013 by the President at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The recipient of certificates of honour for 2012 for Sanskrit included Sadguru Krishnayaji, Krishnanand Jha, Manisha Pathak, Ravindra Kumar Nagar, Ambaram Manishankar Joshi, Rameshwar Dutt Sharma, Harish Chandra Renapurkar, K Chandra Sekharan Nair, Chande Pankaj Trimbak, Pandit Gobinda Chandra Mishra, Swami Nigambodh Teerth (Radhakrishna), Pushkar Dutt Sharma, Pazhaveri Chakravarthy Satakopachariar, Sudhanshushekhar Shastri and Jaidev Vedalankar.
Professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, Cardona was conferred certificate of honour for 2012 for his scholarly work Sanskrit grammar and contribution to the research in the ancient language. The certificate of honour for the year 2013 was conferred on Goldman who translated epic poem Valmiki Ramayan into English in a massive project involving American and Canadian scholars.
Certificates of honour for the year 2012 in Persian were conferred on to Hafiz Abdul Mannan, Hafiz Shah Taqi Anwar, Khan Mohammad Atif while for Arabic the recipient included Maulana Mufti Hakim Ahmad Hasan Khan, Sayed Kafeel Ahmad Qasmi and Shams Tabrez Khan. Sudarshan Lal Jain was recipient of certificate for Pali/Prakrit.
In addition, the President conferred Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman to the following scholars of Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and Pali/Prakrit for the year 2012. Parmanand Jha, K.E. Madhusudanan, Vishnukant Pandey, Shatrughna Tripathi, Mohammed Ehtesharmuddin and Rajnish Shukla.
For the year 2013 certificate of honour to scholars of Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and Pali/Prakrit were conferred on Subbarayan Peri, Krishna Lal, Hansaben N Hindocha, Chandra Kant Shukla, Mallikarjun B Paraddi, Mohan Gupta, Mithila Prasad Tripathi, Alekha Chandra Sarangi, Padam Shastri, Ganeshi Lal Suthar, Prashsya Mitra Shastri, Bhagirath Prasad Tripathi 'Vagish Shastri', Jaya Shankar Lal Tripathi.
Qamar Ghaffar and M H Siddiqui were given certificate for honour for Persian while Mohammad Azeemuddin, Zikrur Rahman and Ahmad Naseem Siddiqui were felicitated for their contribution in Arabic for the year 2013. Bhikshu Satyapal was given certificate of honour for Pali/Prakrit. The recipients of Maharshi Badrayan Vyas Samman for 2013 included Balram Shukla, Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi, K Ventatesha Moorthy, Neeraj Sharma and Upendra Kumar Tripathif for Sanskrit, Shabib Anwar Alavi for Persian, Ashfaq Ahmad for Arabic and Anekant Kumar Jain for Pali/Prakrit.
