The High Court on Wednesday issued notices to state government, Department of Social Welfare and Prisons, Home Secretary, ADGP&IGP of Prisons and the Karnataka Human Rights Commission in connection with a public interest litigation petition alleging low wages and lack of basic facilities to prisoners.
During the hearing the petitioner Rajaram Sooryambail from Dakshina Kannada stated that, “The prisoners, who are undergoing rigorous imprisonment are paid very low wage of Rs 30 per day and are in a pathetic condition. The prisoners are entitled for the wage for a work they are discharging as per the Minimum Wages Act.” He further contended that, almost all of the 102 jails across the state are not maintained properly and the prisoners are ill treated. After hearing the petition the Division Bench adjourned the case.
