CHENNAI: Multi-level car parks, additional bus terminuses and extension of the existing flyovers at Thyagaraya Nagar were a few proposals put forth by Jones Lang LaSalle, the international property consultant appointed by the Chennai Corporation to carry out a study on redevelopment of the commercial hub.Releasing the report at the third public consultation on urban redevelopment for Thyagaraya Nagar here on Thursday, the consultant underlined that increasing the space for pedestrians, traffic calming and multi-level crossing were the thrust areas.Accordingly, it suggested raising the pedestrian space from 8,000 sq m to 28,000 sq m and effective utilisation of open spaces such as the major parks in the area, Panagal Park, Natesan Park and Jeeva Park.It proposed the setting up of multi-level parking in North Usman Road, Dr Nair Road, in front of Panagal Park and T Nagar bus terminus, defining the space earmarked for parking in the business nerve centre of the city.“About one lakh people visit T Nagar at any given time during Dassehra and Diwali festivals for shopping.Parking is required for as many as 1,500 two-wheelers and 1,600 four-wheelers,” it stressed.Pointing out that additional bus terminuses must be established in the neighbourhood of Saidapet and Valluvar Kottam, the consultant souwght better transport facilities for Thyagaraya Nagar. Extension of Bazulla Road and South Usman Road flyover till Anna Salai is part of the key proposals by the consultant.The consultant also stressed on the need for preserving the cultural environment of Thyagaraya Nagar.
