Customers faced inconvenience in Punjab and Haryana as public sector bank employees went on a two-day strike from Monday to press for various demands including wage revision.
Agitating bank employees under the banner of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) carried out protest rallies and held demonstrations at several places including Ludhiana and Chandigarh. They even locked bank offices from outside in order to prevent customers entering the branches at several places in the region.
Because of strike, cheques worth several crore of rupees remained uncleared while other transactions such as cash withdrawal and cash and cheque deposits could not be done. Industrial segment had to face tough times as they lamented that their business transactions were adversely affected.
"We have been forced to take this extreme step because of bank management's apathetic attitude towards employees' demands. We have been left with no option except to observe strike," Punjab Bank Employees' Federation Secretary Naresh Gaur said.
