HYDERABAD: After French DJ David Guetta made a visit to India earlier this year, it is now the turn of British DJ Fatboy Slim to churn out his tunes for the Indian audience. And, VJ-DJ Nikhil Chinapa, who couldn’t be more thrilled about it, says that there are many more surprises this year. “I can’t reveal them. But, yes, the list of artists coming this year is more than that of last year’s,” shares Nikhil, whose company 6th Dimension Entertainment is bringing celebrated DJ Norman Quentin Cook, aka Fatboy Slim to Delhi and Bengaluru this weekend. The PizzamanNikhil’s connection with Fatboy Slim goes way back to MTV Select days. Recalls Nikhil, “He gave the theme song for my show, MTV Select, which was called the Pizzaman track and ofcourse, the Pizzaman was none other than Norman Cook. He brings out a lot of music under different names.” And, after four years of trying to get this versatile artist to India, Nikhil jumped at the first opportunity they got. “His schedule was so jam-packed that we could only get him for a two-day tour. But, this concert is going to be one-of-a-kind,” assures Nikhil.Future of EDM in IndiaNikhil believes that market for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) in India is growing at a rapid pace. He, furthermore says that India and Brazil will become most-wanted destinations for various international artists. “America and Europe have established markets for EDM and people there have a feeling of I have seen it all. But, that’s not the case in India and Brazil,” says Nikhil. He further points out that an artist loves to explore different places and likes performing at venues where he/she receive a tremendous response from the audience. “Cricket matches keep taking place in Mumbai and the stadium might not even be full. But, when matches take place in other small cities, the stadium is full, and people are filled with energy,” he compares, explaining that the future of EDM is bright in India. The three Ts — Teenagers, Trend and TechnologyNikhil wants to thanks youngsters and technology for the growth of EDM in the country because according to him whatever teenagers like becomes a trend.“Maybe that’s why Jazz, as good as it sounds, has never become trendy, he says. “Now-a-days, youngsters who love music want to become DJs more than anything else. This is because of the technological advances. A youngster can make a good piece of music using his laptop. So, by the time, he/she is an adult, they are already experts at what they do,” opines the artist.DJ vs VJHaving established himself as a well-known VJ and DJ, ask him as to what does he prefer being called and a prompt reply comes, “I respond best when called Nikhil (laughs).” However, he says that being a DJ is a different feeling in itself. “DJ-ing is very relaxing. When I wear my headphone, and play that first song, the feeling is simply incredible,” shares Nikhil, adding that his wife, DJ Pearl is better than him. “A lot of people have told me that Pearl is better than me. And, I agree. I try to do the best I can, but she is a lot more focused DJ,” confesses the artist. My DJ-ing storyAsk Nikhil to narrate his story about becoming a DJ and he recalls, “I became a DJ out of frustration. When I moved to Mumbai in 1997, I realised that most clubs did not play the kind of music I liked. So, I decided to play the kind of music I liked by becoming a DJ myself. I can say that it was partly because of the frustration of no good music and partly because of my passion for music.”A Do-Not-Miss ConcertFatboy Slim is coming to India with his entire production team and equipment, and that’s just one reason for someone to not miss this concert. “He might stop performing after five years, and this may be his first and last performance in India,” shares Nikhil, adding that people should not miss this one-of-a-kind opportunity because it may never happen again in India. The Fatboy Slim India Tour 2012 will take place in Gurgaon on May 5 and in Bengaluru on May 6.
