Seventy-eight members of the PWD engineers co-ordination committee were arrested after they tried to march towards the Chief Secretariat pressing various demands.
The committee‘s general secretary, Ezhilvannan, said that the government was yet to take any action on the April 2010 Supreme Court judgement on reviewing promotion of junior engineers to assistant engineers. He urged the government to hold talks with engineers on the issue.
Ezhivannan said that the token strike and rally was to demand filling up of vacancies at the earliest and also urged that the chief engineer should be appointed on the basis of seniority.
He revealed that PWD engineers would go on an indefinite strike from August 28 if their demands were not met.
